Detroit Series 60 Injector Numbers Explained: 5575, 6952, 7045, 7466, 7650 — What's the Difference?

The Detroit Diesel Series 60 is legendary in the trucking world — millions of 11.1L and 12.7L engines are still running today in Class 8 trucks, buses, and industrial equipment. But the injector numbering system confuses a lot of people. Here's a clear explanation of what each injector number means and which one your engine needs.

Understanding Detroit Series 60 Injector Numbers

Detroit Series 60 injectors are identified by a 4-digit number stamped on the injector body. These numbers represent different flow rates — not different generations or part families. Higher numbers generally flow more fuel, which translates to more power output.

Common Part Numbers and Their Applications

Injector Number Typical Power Range Common Application
5575 350-370 HP Series 60 12.7L, earlier production years, standard fleet spec
6952 370-400 HP Series 60 12.7L, mid-range power
6977 400-430 HP Series 60 12.7L, higher output spec
7045 430-455 HP Series 60 12.7L, high output trucks and buses
7466 455-470 HP Series 60 12.7L, high performance applications
7650 470-500+ HP Series 60 12.7L, highest flow rate stock injector

Which Injector Does My Engine Take?

The correct injector for your Series 60 is determined by your engine's CPL (Control Parts List) number, not just the displacement. The CPL is stamped on a plate on the engine block and determines the fuel map your ECM uses. Running the wrong injector — even a "larger" one — without an ECM tune can actually reduce power and increase fuel consumption.

To find your correct injector:

  1. Locate the CPL plate on your engine block
  2. Cross-reference your CPL with Detroit's parts lookup
  3. Or simply call us at (909) 854-4318 with your CPL and we'll match the right injector

Can I Upgrade to Higher-Flow Injectors?

Yes, but it requires an ECM tune to match. Many owner-operators running the Series 60 12.7L upgrade from stock 5575s or 6952s to 7650s for more power, but without a compatible tune the engine will run rich, smoke heavily, and may not make more power at all. If you're tuning for performance, work with a Detroit-certified tuner before ordering injectors.

Signs Your Series 60 Injectors Need Replacement

  • Rough idle or "loping" at low RPM
  • Black smoke under load
  • Hard starting especially when cold
  • Fuel in the oil (injector seal failure)
  • Inconsistent power delivery between gears
  • High EGT on one or more cylinders

At high mileage (300,000+), it's common for multiple injectors to fail close together. If one has failed, plan to replace all six within the next 50,000 miles.
